Resin vs Block Paving Driveways: Which Is Best for Your Home?
Resin-bound and block paving are the two most popular driveway surfaces we fit across Newcastle and the North East. Both look great and last for years when they’re laid on a proper base, but they suit different homes, budgets and priorities.
Resin-bound driveways
A resin-bound driveway is made from natural aggregate mixed with clear resin and trowelled smooth over a solid base. The result is a seamless, modern finish with no loose stones, and because it’s permeable, rainwater drains straight through.
- Smooth, clean finish in a wide range of colours and blends
- Permeable, which usually makes planning simpler
- Low maintenance: an occasional sweep and rinse
- Works well with contrasting borders and kerbs
Block paving driveways
Block paving uses individual concrete blocks laid in a pattern over a compacted sub-base, then jointed with kiln-dried sand. Herringbone is the strongest pattern for driveways, and contrasting soldier-course borders give a crisp, defined edge.
- Classic look with lots of patterns and colours
- Very hard-wearing under cars and vans
- Individual blocks can be lifted and relaid for repairs
- Easy to match with steps, paths and borders
Side-by-side comparison
Resin-bound
- Seamless, modern finish
- Permeable surface
- Minimal upkeep
- Needs a sound, well-prepared base
Block paving
- Traditional, textured finish
- Drainage planned into the falls
- Occasional re-sanding of joints
- Simple to repair or extend
If you want a clean, contemporary look with very little maintenance, resin is hard to beat. If your drive takes heavy use or you like a traditional finish with a defined border, block paving is a great choice. On a free visit we’ll look at your levels and drainage and recommend what suits your home.
Planning permission and drainage
You usually don’t need planning permission for a new front driveway if the surface is permeable, like resin-bound, or if rainwater runs onto a lawn or border. Planning permission is normally needed to lay a non-permeable surface over 5 square metres in a front garden. We’ll talk you through this when we visit.
Common questions
Which is cheaper, resin or block paving?
It depends on the size of the drive, the dig-out needed and the materials you choose. We’ll give you a clear written price for both options on a free visit so you can compare.
How long does each take to install?
Most driveways take a few days to a week. Resin needs a short curing time before you can drive on it. We’ll give you a timescale with your quote.
Can you add borders, steps and paths?
Yes. Most of our driveways include contrasting borders, and we often build matching paths and steps at the same time.
