Artificial grass installers for Newcastle and the North East

We lay artificial grass for homeowners in Newcastle, Gosforth, Ponteland, Durham, Sunderland, Washington, Middlesbrough and across the North East, as a single lawn or as part of a full garden makeover.

A good artificial lawn is all about what goes underneath. North East gardens are often on heavy clay that stays wet for months, so we dig out properly, build a deep, compacted stone base and make sure the water has somewhere to go. Then we lay the grass with tight seams and firm edges, so it stays flat, drains well and looks right for years.

Where artificial grass works best

It isn’t the right answer for every garden, but in these situations it’s hard to beat.

Family gardens

Hard-wearing · Mud-free · Year-round

No muddy patches by the back door and no bald spots from goalposts and trampolines. The lawn is usable the day after heavy rain.

  • Shaped, hard-wearing blades
  • Soft shock pad for play areas
  • Green all year round

Dog owners

Permeable · Easy to clean

Dogs can’t dig it up and paws stay clean. A fully permeable grass on a free-draining base lets urine wash straight through.

  • Fully permeable backing
  • Rinses clean with a hose
  • No yellow patches

Shady and awkward spaces

Shade · Slopes · Small lawns

Where real grass won’t grow, under trees, between buildings or in small courtyard gardens, artificial grass stays green and tidy.

  • Stays green in full shade
  • Fits curves and tight corners
  • Pairs with patios and paths

Why the base matters more than the grass

Most artificial lawns that fail do so because of the ground underneath, not the grass. When turf is laid straight onto soil, or onto a thin layer of sand, it sinks, ripples and holds puddles. On North East clay this can happen within the first winter.

We dig out the old lawn, fix firm edging, build up a compacted stone sub-base and finish it with a smooth laying course. Where the ground is very wet, we dig deeper and add drainage so water can get away. It takes longer, but it’s the difference between a lawn that looks good for one summer and one that lasts.

How we lay an artificial lawn

Every layer has a job. This is what goes under a typical lawn we build.

LayerWhat we do
Dig outOld turf and soil removed to around 75–100mm, deeper on soft or clay ground.
EdgingTreated timber, composite or sleeper edging fixed round the edge to hold everything in place.
Sub-baseMOT Type 1 crushed stone, compacted in layers with a plate compactor.
Laying courseGranite dust or sharp sand, screeded flat and compacted to a smooth, firm finish.
Weed membranePermeable membrane laid to stop weeds coming up while letting water through.
The grassCut in, seams joined with tape and adhesive, fixed to the edging and brushed up.

Choosing the right grass

We bring samples on your visit so you can see and feel the difference in your own garden light.

  1. 01

    Pile height

Shorter piles of around 25–30mm are hard-wearing and easy to keep tidy. Longer piles of 35–40mm feel more luxurious and look more like a freshly cut lawn.

  2. 02

    Colour and thatch

A mix of greens and a brown “thatch” at the base looks far more natural than a single bright green, especially in North East light.

  3. 03

    Blade shape

Shaped blades spring back after being walked on, so the lawn keeps its look in busy family gardens.

  4. 04

    Backing and drainage

A fully permeable backing lets rain drain straight through. We’ll check the drainage figures on any grass you’re considering.

Artificial grass as part of a full garden

Artificial grass looks its best framed by a crisp patio edge, a path or a raised bed. Because we build patios, paths, fencing and decking as well, we can plan the levels and edges together, so the lawn sits flush with the paving and there are no awkward gaps to fill.

Many of our lawns are laid alongside a new porcelain or sandstone patio, a deck or as part of a complete garden makeover.

Artificial grass questions

Quick answers to the questions we get asked most.

Can’t see your question? Get in touch or call 0191 245 5045.

How long does artificial grass last?

A good quality artificial lawn laid on a properly built base usually lasts 10 years or more. How long yours lasts depends on the product, how much use it gets and how well the base was prepared. Most quality grasses come with a manufacturer’s guarantee against UV fading, and we’ll show you the guarantee for the grass you choose before you decide.

Will artificial grass drain on clay soil?

Yes, if the base is built for it. Clay holds water, so we dig out deeper, lay a thicker layer of compacted MOT Type 1 stone and check where the water will go. On very wet sites we add extra drainage before the grass goes down, so water can get away instead of sitting under the lawn.

Is artificial grass good for dogs?

It works well for dogs because there are no muddy patches or dug-up lawns. The grass is fully permeable, so urine drains through the backing and the stone base. Pick up solids as normal, rinse the area with a hose now and then, and use a pet-safe artificial grass cleaner to keep it fresh.

How long does it take to install?

Most gardens take between one and three days. A small back lawn is often done in a day, while larger gardens, difficult access or extra groundwork such as levelling or drainage can take longer. We’ll give you a timescale with your quote.

Does artificial grass need any maintenance?

Very little. Brush it against the pile every few weeks to keep the blades upright, clear leaves with a leaf blower or plastic rake, and rinse it occasionally. Treat the edges for weeds once or twice a year. There’s no mowing, feeding or watering.

Will weeds grow through it?

Weeds can’t grow up through a properly laid lawn because we lay a weed membrane under the base and the grass itself has a solid backing. Occasionally seeds blow in and settle on top or at the edges, and these are easy to pull out.

Does artificial grass get hot?

It can get warm in strong direct sun, like any synthetic surface. A quick spray with water cools it down. Reflected sunlight from some windows can damage the fibres, and so can barbecues and fire pits, so we’ll point out anything to watch for when we visit.

Can you lay artificial grass on concrete or an old patio?

Yes. On a sound, level concrete or paved area we lay a foam shock pad first, which makes the grass feel softer underfoot and helps with drainage. If the surface doesn’t drain, we’ll check it can get away before we start.

How much does artificial grass cost?

It depends on the size of the area, how much dig-out and levelling is needed, the grass you choose, the edging, and access to the garden. We measure up on a free visit and give you a clear written price that includes the groundwork, base, grass, edging and taking away the waste.

Do you remove the old lawn?

Yes. We strip the old turf and soil, take it all away and leave the garden tidy. Removing and disposing of the waste is included in your quote.
